How Herniated Discs Occur
Disc are soft, rubbery pads between the vertebrae that comprise the spinal column. Made of a thick outer ring of cartilage (annulus) and an inner gel-like substance (nucleus), these discs enable the back to bend and absorb shock.
When the cartilage develops a defect or tear, however, the nucleus can break through and bulges out, putting pressure on the nerves. Whether major or minor, any type of pressure can cause pain or numbness.
